Facing Fears with Fixed Firm

It’s time to make a change. It’s time to become more of who I am. I’ve been writing on another blog for almost a year now: http://confessionsofahawaiianprincess.wordpress.com, but I recently decided that Yoga Princess https://confessionsofayogaprincess.wordpress.com fits my persona better. Hawaii always has been and always will be near and dear to my heart as a motivating factor in my quest to improve myself, but it often confused people, requiring frequent explanation.  I’ve always loved yoga and seen it as a lifestyle  and not just a practice or an exercise routine. Yoga comes from the breath and breath gives life to my hopes, to my dreams, to my aspirations, so with excitement and joy I start this new chapter of my evolution with a blog entry on…….Bikram Yoga!  Read On!

Some of the poses in Bikram Yoga I have trouble with because of my current body shape; with others it’s my mind; and, with all poses difficulties arise from a combination of body and mind.

Fixed Firm has always stood out for me as a pose I aspire to achieve. Yet, paradoxically, I’ve also always felt I never would be able to achieve it, at least not until I had a skinnier body. But I’ve been around long enough to know that EACH AND EVERY TIME I utter the words “I’m not skinny enough to do that” or “I’m too fat to do that” it’s my brain working diligently at limiting me.

You see, my mind, left to its own devices would have me devouring sugary fatty foods to the point of emotional oblivion. My sneaky devious mind would have me believe there are so so so many things I can’t do, when the truth is just the opposite—I can do anything! I might have to work for it, but, if I put my mind to work, the possibilities are limitless.

Fixed Firm brings a whole new dimension to the mental, emotional and physical healing aspects of yoga. In addition to the struggles my body might have in fulfilling the ideal logistics of the posture, Fixed Firm drudges up the fears of the past, fears I can’t quite explain without telling you a story, a simple story.

I think I might have been 8 or 9 or some age therein. I happened to be at a gathering in Big Bear, in someone’s house. I found myself rocking back and forth in a recliner when suddenly it tipped all the way back, scaring me.  I cried out to the adults around me for help getting up, but they just laughed and told me I got into this myself, so I could figure out how to get out of it myself.

Somehow I did manage to get back up, but ever since that time I have had a fear of falling backward. I can be in the chair getting my hair done, and if the chair moves back too quickly I find myself feeling startled, and, normally, I’ll jump. I’ve been working on conquering this fear I have of falling backward, and I’ve gotten much better, but…….

When I’m in fixed firm, when I find my way to the fullest expression possible at this moment I have to fight the fear, the fear of not being able to get up, the fear of being stuck somewhere without help……it’s just fear.

Paradoxically, when my body finds its way into the pose, I also feel elation! Sheer JOY! My heart sings for my body is finding and exploring new places, and every time my body finds a new place my soul soars.

In that very real sense, fixed firm, my yoga, heals me in ways nothing else can for each time I enter the fear and fight through it to experience the joy I inch closer to my goal of self-realized love anchored on the inside.

    Your fixed firm looks great! I too struggle with it and am surprised that it feels good, even though I haven’t been able to do the complete pose.

    Nancy, the progress you have made in this pose is simply amazing and you should feel so proud of yourself! Looking at your progress in these photos, I feel proud for you! 🙂 Leila’s pictures are beautiful and elegant, and clearly display your courage and confidence! Keep moving forward Nancy! I know I say this for others, as well as myself…Thank you for sharing your journey, your highs and lows, your trials and tribulations. Many people, including me, will find comfort in your words and know that they are not alone within their own journey and will be inspired and motivated by you sharing yours! 🙂

  3. I just discovered your blog today- I saw a photo of you on Facebook. A friend of mine shared your picture of your 2 shots of Fixed Firm that was posted on My Real Yoga Body. I am so inspired by you, particularly because I’ve been thinking recently that I need to do regular yoga to help this bod of mine. But I’ve been hesitant because of my large size and because of recovering from surgery on one of my feet last summer (it was a doozey). Just wondering, did you start off taking classes or did you do yoga at home? I’ve taken about 2 bikram classes in my life, and have done a few other yoga classes, but not in the past decade. I think I need to just bite the bullet and get into a regular class. -Sue

    Hi Nancy, Just read about you in Prevention. What a great story! It sure serves as an reminder to overweight people that we need to take care of ourselves. This too is my first Father’s Day without my dad, and was also the first Mother’s Day without my mom. It’s been very emotional and I gained back 15 pounds of the 20 I had lost. I tried a “beginner’s” yoga class a couple years ago. It was a great workout, a great sweat, but my knees, back, shoulder and ankle give me so much trouble. I’m turning 50 next week and wanted to do something to help myself become healthier. I’d also be honoring the life my parents gave me. I will definitely look into a hot yoga class in my area. Thanks so much for sharing your journey, I’ll be following you!
